International Day of Happiness - your happiness is part of something bigger!

15 March, 2015

Making people happy is what we’re all about, so we think today is a pretty good day - the campaign is a global celebration to mark 20th March as the United Nations International Day of Happiness. It is coordinated by ‘Action for Happiness’, a non-profit movement of people from 160 countries who are on a mission to get people happy and more connected with each other. In short, they want everyone to create and share something positive to make the world a happier place…. so here’s our contribution!

Studies* have shown that 50% of a person’s happiness is determined by genetics, 10% is affected by life circumstances and 40% is down to a person’s outlook on life.

We might not be able to change some things in life but we can make changes to the way we do things and that’s going to help make us happy!

  • Spring Equinox, that’s today! - the time when nights get shorter and the days get longer. Summer’s coming!

  • Just 20 minutes of exercise three times a day each week will increase your happiness by 10-20% in just six months!

  • The happier you are, the more antibodies your body generates - up to 50% more in fact! The more antibodies you have, the less likely you are to get ill.

  • Dancing increases happiness.

  • Sports facilities and community centres increase a community’s overall happiness

  • Money does not buy happiness - after having your basic material needs met, studies* have shown that additional money does not have any impact on your level of happiness.

  • Education and intelligence do not make you more happy than anyone else.

  • The more you hug your children, the happier they will be as adults.

  • The most powerful way to increase your short term happiness is to perform random acts of kindness to others, or send a letter of gratitude to someone you care about. Five such acts in a week will increase your happiness for up to three months.

As the International Day of Happiness suggests, making yourself happy is just the beginning of the journey - be sure to pass the happiness on!
