Smart Export Guarantee

Utilita Energy is a mandatory Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) licensee. This means we are obliged to participate in the SEG scheme as a condition of our supply license.

What is the Smart Export Guarantee?

The Smart Export Guarantee is an obligated scheme set by the government for licensed electricity suppliers to offer a tariff and make payments to small-scale low-carbon generators for electricity exported to the National Grid, providing certain criteria are met.

Utilita, as a mandatory SEG licensee, will pay you for every kilowatt hour of unused, eligible electricity you generate and feed into the National Grid.

The SEG is an opportunity for anyone who has installed one of the following technology types up to a capacity of 5MW, or up to 50kW for Micro-CHP:

  • Solar Photovoltaic (solar PV).
  • Wind.
  • Micro combined heat and power (CHP).
  • Hydo.
  • Anaerobic digestion (AD).
  • These installations must be located in Great Britain.

If you have battery storage alongside your solar panels, your rates may change. You’d need to let us know during your application so we can ensure an export tariff is the right choice for you.

Benefits of our SEG tariff

With SEG, if your home generates renewable electricity, you can sell back anything you don’t use to the national grid. Once you’ve applied and been accepted, you’ll be paid for every unit of electricity that you feed back into the grid at a rate of 3p/kWh. This only applies to your excess energy, and you won’t be paid anything for energy you use in your home.

How do I apply?

To apply, you’ll need to have a renewable electricity generating system such as solar panels, you must have a meter that can provide half-hourly export readings (usually a smart meter), and you’ll need to show that any installation or installer relating to your renewable energy are certified through the microgeneration certification scheme (MCS) or equivalent.

We’ll also need to see supporting documents to verify your proof of ownership and your identity. For a full list of eligibility criteria, click here. If you want to get access to a SEG tariff through Utilita Energy, just fill out our application form.

Your application is then processed by Utilita, and we apply to the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) for an export MPAN (this is a unique number for the electricity meter in your property, and when export is set up for the first time, a new MPAN must be requested from the Distribution Network Operator).

Your MPAN is created (1-4 weeks)

The DNO creates your export MPAN - this is the longest part of the application process because this is out of our control and is dependent on the resources available to the DNO. Once the MPAN is created, we can begin the enrolment onto our supply.

Your MPAN is enrolled (5 days)

Your new export MPAN is enrolled on your account, and you’ll receive an email asking you for a first meter reading.

We’ll ask you to send us your meter reading and a photo of your full export meter so we can verify everything looks right. Once you send your reading, your account will be checked to ensure that crediting has been successful.
