A bright idea: Transparency in action with Utilita’s Live Carbon Dashboard

What if you could see, in real-time, the environmental impact of your energy supplier? Now you can.

At Utilita, we’ve always been dedicated to helping households across the UK reduce their energy consumption and lower their carbon footprints. But sustainability isn’t just about what you do at home—it’s about the responsibility we take as an energy provider. That’s why we’re excited to launch the Live Carbon Dashboard, offering an unprecedented level of transparency into our own carbon emissions as a company.

This innovative and new initiative reflects our commitment to not only supplying energy but doing so in a way that’s as sustainable as possible.

Why transparency matters

Every business has a role to play in tackling climate change. At Utilita, we believe that by holding ourselves publicly accountable for our carbon footprint, we can inspire positive change across the energy sector, and wave goodbye to the use of green tariffs, which are essentially greenwashing tickets.

With the Live Carbon Dashboard, we’re inviting everyone—customers, partners, and the public—to monitor our efforts to reduce carbon emissions in real-time. This transparency empowers us to continually improve and demonstrate how a company can prioritise sustainability while delivering vital services.

How the Live Carbon Dashboard works

  1. Real-Time Monitoring
The dashboard provides a live feed of Utilita’s operational carbon emissions, offering clear insights into our environmental impact.
  2. Key Metrics Displayed
It tracks emissions across several areas of our operations – office energy use, fleet emissions, business travel and expenses. We are working on the live tracking of the rest of our upstream and downstream supply chain.
  3. Continuous Improvement
By identifying patterns and areas for improvement, the dashboard helps us implement strategies to reduce emissions over time and we will improve this dashboard overtime, covering more emission sources in greater granularity.
  4. Public Accountability
Anyone can access the Live Carbon Dashboard to hold us, and the government, accountable for decarbonising the energy system at the necessary rate to avoid the worse impacts of the climate crisis whilst staying informed about our sustainability progress.

Leading by example

Small actions can lead to big results—and that’s as true for companies as it is for individuals. For instance, our ongoing efforts to transition our fleet to electric vehicles have already reduced a significant portion of our transportation emissions.

Now, with the Live Carbon Dashboard, you can see these efforts in action. By making our progress visible, we hope to encourage other companies and individuals to embrace similar initiatives, creating a ripple effect of positive change.

The bigger picture

The Live Carbon Dashboard isn’t just a tool for measuring emissions—it’s a reflection of our values. As a business we’re committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2030, and we want our customers and stakeholders to come on this journey with us.

By sharing our carbon data in real-time, we aim to lead the way in transparency and inspire others to adopt more sustainable practices. Together, we can create a cleaner, greener future.

What we can control, and what we can’t control

We can set ourselves a net zero by 2030 target because our business operations are within our control. However, we have no control over the carbon content of the energy that we supply. National government policies are responsible for determining the National Grid electricity fuel mix, which supplies every home in the UK.

Sadly, around half of the UK’s electricity supply is still generated by polluting fossil fuels. The Government has set an ambition of net zero electricity by 2030, and by omission net zero home heating by 2050, and we intend to hold them to this target.

Our live carbon dashboard shows the current intensity of energy being consumed by Utilita customers and sets out the pathway to net zero 2050. Even though we can’t change the grid mix, our dashboard makes sure everyone knows what energy they are consuming, so that you can use energy at the cleanest and greenest times. In true Utilita style, we are lobbying policy makers for positive change here, too. Watch this space.
