Utilita welcomes UK’s solar boom but says more support needed to help lower-income households benefit

Utilita has welcomed new Government figures showing record growth in solar installations across the UK, while calling for greater support to ensure the benefits of renewable energy are accessible to all households.

The new data from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero reveals that almost 172,000 solar installations have been fitted across the UK since the start of 2026, with more than 19,800 rooftop systems installed in July alone, equivalent to one installation every two minutes. The figures also show solar deployment has increased across every UK nation and English region over the last 12 months.

The South East leads the way with more than 22,600 installations this year, followed by the East of England and South West, as more households look to generate their own electricity and reduce reliance on the grid.

Record solar growth welcomed by Utilita

Commenting on the figures, Ella Moorey, Group Sustainability Lead at Utilita, said:
“It’s hugely encouraging to see more households embracing solar power. Generating electricity at home can play an important role in reducing carbon emissions and helping families gain greater control over their energy use.”

She added:
“However, the upfront cost of solar technology remains a significant barrier for many households, particularly those already struggling with energy affordability. The UK’s transition to cleaner energy must be one that includes everyone, not just those who can afford the initial investment.”

Plug-in solar panels could improve accessibility

The Government recently announced that plug-in solar panels will become available across Great Britain, with major retailers expected to begin offering the technology following regulatory changes. The move is intended to make solar energy more accessible and easier to install.

Ella Moorey said the development could help broaden access to renewable energy:
“Innovations such as plug-in solar have the potential to make renewable energy more accessible to a wider range of households, including renters and people living in smaller properties who have traditionally been excluded from the benefits of rooftop solar.”

“As the energy landscape evolves, consumers need clear guidance and trusted support to understand which technologies are right for them and how they can maximise any savings. Education and accessibility will be just as important as technological innovation.”

Supporting a fair energy transition

Utilita believes that alongside investment in renewable generation, policies that improve energy efficiency and support vulnerable households will be critical to delivering a fair energy transition.

Ella concluded:
“The record growth in solar installations shows there is strong public appetite for cleaner, homegrown energy. The challenge now is ensuring that the benefits are shared as widely as possible, helping more households reduce their carbon footprint while keeping energy affordable.”
