Smart Export Guarantee

If you generate your own electricity from a renewable source, the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) gives you the chance to earn money by exporting any unused electricity back to the National Grid.

Utilita Energy is a mandatory SEG licensee, which means we’re required by law to offer a Smart Export Guarantee tariff. You don’t need to be a Utilita customer to apply.

What is the Smart Export Guarantee?

The Smart Export Guarantee is a government scheme that requires licensed electricity suppliers to pay customers for renewable electricity they export to the grid.

If you have eligible equipment installed, you’ll get paid for every kilowatt hour (kWh) of unused electricity you generate and export - as long as certain criteria is met.

You could be eligible if you generate electricity using one of the following systems (up to 5MW, or up to 50kW or Micro-CHP):

  • Solar Photovoltaic (solar PV).
  • Wind.
  • Hydro.
  • Anaerobic Digestion (AD).
  • Micro Combined Heat and Power (CHP).

Your installation must be based in Great Britain and meet recognised certification standards (such as MCS or equivalent).

Benefits of our SEG tariff

Once you’re accepted onto the scheme, we’ll pay you 3p per kWh for any electricity you export – not including the energy you use yourself.

This gives you the chance to make money from renewable electricity you don’t need, while still using what you generate at home.

How do I apply?

To apply, you’ll need:

  • A renewable electricity generating system (like solar panels).
  • A meter capable of providing half-hourly export readings (usually a smart meter).
  • MCS (or equivalent) certification for both the installation and installer.
  • Proof of identity and ownership. See the full list here.

Once you’ve gathered this information, fill out our application form to get started.

Your application is then processed by Utilita, and we apply to the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) for an export MPAN (this is a unique number for the electricity meter in your property, and when export is set up for the first time, a new MPAN must be requested from the Distribution Network Operator). For more information, click here.

What Next?

Step 1 - We review your application (within 2 working days):
We’ll check all your documents and let you know if we need anything else. If you already have an export MPAN (a unique reference for your meter), we can move straight to the next step.

Step 2 - Your export MPAN is created (1 - 4 weeks):
If this is your first time exporting energy, we’ll apply to your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) to create your export MPAN. This step can take a little longer, as it’s managed by the DNO.

Step 3 - MPAN enrolled (within 5 working days):
Once your MPAN is ready, we’ll add it to your account and ask you for your first export meter reading – including a clear photo of your meter. We’ll then check everything over and confirm when payments are ready to begin.
