It’s officially 2018 - Happy New Year to all our customers!
So, Christmas has passed, and now the excuse to eat, drink and feel merry is well and truly over. January is here and the expense of Christmas can often leave our wallet feeling lighter.
January doesn’t need to be the cliché miserable month. With a few small lifestyle changes, it can be easier to watch the pennies (Especially if your new year’s resolution is to save more).
Here, we share our top money saving tips!
1. Create a budget
This is one of the most important places to start, and is the foundation of your money saving plan.
There are some great apps for your smart phone to help with this, such as: ‘My Budgets’, ‘Money Monitor: Expense Tracker’, ‘Budget Wiz’ – ‘Monthly Home Budget Planner’, and ‘Goodbudget Budget Planner’.
These apps allow you to enter your monthly income, along with an outgoing section for pretty much everything you could possible imagine, allowing you to see where your money is going, and where you could cut back.
2. Don’t auto renew
Did you know that many insurance companies automatically re-new your yearly insurance? It’s worth setting a reminder, whether it’s in your diary, phone, or calendar, a couple of weeks before it ends to allow time to shop for a better deal, or see if your current insurer can give you a better price. Comparison sites such as compare the market, money supermarket, and go compare can be really useful.
3. Shop around
Do you have some big purchases planned for this year? Perhaps a new kitchen appliance which is on its last legs, a family holiday, or upgrading the TV? Whether it’s a big or small purchase, shopping around can result in a saving. John Lewis also offers a price match, where they will match the price of a product if it’s being sold for cheaper elsewhere.
Check out Price Runner to compare prices on Phones, Computing, Home appliances, Toys, Photography and Gaming.
SkySkanner is great for comparing the price of flights, hotels and travel.
For food, house hold and beauty items ‘My Supermarket’ compares products at all supermarkets to find you the cheapest price.
4. Change your food habits
Do you find you buy the same branded products in the supermarket each week? Switching a few of your beloved branded products to supermarket own brands can make great savings, and quite often, there isn’t much difference. (Obviously, there is no compromising on baked beans for the HEINZ lovers!).
Another saving which will make a difference will be cutting down on take-away coffee and food. You may not think it at the time, but over the weeks and months, it all adds up. A great alternative is getting a re-usable coffee cup and making your own coffee in the morning and throughout the day. Some of the bigger coffee chains also offer a discount when you bring your own re-usable cup. Starbucks & Costa give a 25p discount and Pret a Manger offer a 50p discount!
5. Cooking from scratch
This can sometimes seem daunting, and result in a trip to the supermarket to stock up on loads of ingredients - but often works out cheaper, and you can bulk cook, freezing what you don’t use for other nights/weeks.
A particularly good cook book if you don’t want to work with too many ingredients is the new Jamie Oliver ‘5 ingredients’ Cookbook. This book provides simple and easy-to-make recipes, and ever better, you’ll only ever need five ingredients (could you tell from the title of the book?).
6. Buy Second Hand
Although it’s nice to have some things brand new (we won’t state the obvious) buying second hand can be a quick win. DVDs, second hand game consoles & games, and even clothes can go unnoticed as being used, and will perform the same as if they were brand new. Most of the time you’ll manage to save a tonne at the same time. CEX is a great place to get used games consoles, games, DVD and electrical goods. When it comes to used clothes, charity shops can be goldmines. If you look hard enough, you’re bound to find a gem!
