National Cut Your Energy Costs Day
Did you know that the 10th January was ‘National Cut Your Energy Costs Day’? It’s surprisingly hard to keep up with all the national and international day events (there is actually a ‘Bittersweet Chocolate with Almonds Day’) so we made a point to write this exciting energy-based event into the diary.
We at Utilita think that the underlying message of this day is really important and something close to our hearts, making it a big event not only for us but one we want to share with our customers too. Naturally, we all want to save on the pennies and so cutting our energy usage is a perfect way to do this!
‘Cut Your Energy Costs Day’ has been a fantastic way for all kinds of energy users to share ways in which to keep energy costs down by offering important advice and tips. The 10th January saw various companies and bloggers spread the word in order for households across the world to cut down on their energy usage. But we think the energy saving shouldn’t stop there and hope that being with us makes our customers feel like it’s ‘National Cut Your Energy Costs Year’!
Here are the top 5 ways we feel you can cut down on the amount of energy your home is using…
1. Turn it off!
We all know it, but leaving things on standby is still a key money-drainer – sometimes as much as 10% of a household’s yearly energy bill. Depending on what appliance it is and what your energy rates are, the average person could save around £80 a year, just by taking things off standby and switching them off at the plug socket. Also, did you know some appliances also use up ‘ghost electricity’ simply by being plugged in? Utilita want to get rid of any unnecessary costs and this simple measure could make a big difference. By using our prepayment smart meters you can see what the true effects of turning appliances off in your home really are. Why not try it for yourself by having a play with our virtual smart meter? 2. Get draft excluders
Letting in those tiny drafts makes your home significantly colder and less cost efficient. Instead of cranking up the gas or electricity costs, just a few insulators strategically fitted around the odd door or window here and there could do wonders to making your house greener and warmer. In fact, this simple change could save you around £20 each year.
3. Keep cool in the kitchen
Energy experts reckon that near on £50 a year could be saved just by becoming a little more mindful when using kitchen appliances. Not leaving the tap running when washing up, washing clothes at 30⁰C and being careful to not overfill the kettle will all add to your energy costs. Again, Utilita’s smart meters are an excellent, transparent way to see exactly how much you are using and when, for example, by using the weekly overview graphs in the history function of our in-home display. Customers can also set daily targets for energy usage to avoid exceeding their personal limit.
4. Use your head!
If you get hot water direct from your boiler then fitting an energy efficient shower head could be a great way to cut long term costs. Savings could rocket into the hundreds depending on the size your household and some water companies are literally giving these handy heads away for free to help keep cost down! 5. Get firm with your thermostat
Boiler replacements can be expensive and cost up to £5,000, so in the meantime using a thermostat to correctly control your heat could help you save £150 a year. By gradually turning the temperature up by 1⁰c a day, you can find the correct warmth for you and potentially save £55 a year. Another good idea is to ‘zone’ your heating which by dropping the temperature in the rooms of course saves money. If you’d like to discuss options, Utilita’s Customer Services Team are trained to give impartial energy efficiency advice and tips on how to get the most from your heating, so why not give us a call on 03452 072 000? Lines are open 8am – 8pm Monday to Friday and 8am – 1pm Saturdays.
